Much of my work evolves as an attempt to solve a design problem. One that I create and then unravel as the painting progresses. Starting with a white surface as the initial problem I begin filling space. I combine geometry and free flowing elements and try to find the appropriate balance, allowing them to occupy the same space. Just as life is constantly changing, so does a painting. I don’t always know what I am going to end up with. It is that uncertainty that I find both challenging and frustrating. Through the use of and experimentation with materials, themes, colors, shape, texture, and movement I am able to solve the problem on the canvas. I never sketch an idea beforehand. I go right into the painting, and the materials dictate the flow of the painting. The basis of my work is emotion. It is about how I’m feeling at a particular moment in time and my reaction with the materials. My work is instinctual and relies heavily on the relationship and balance between order and chaos. My work uses color as its foundation. Color has the ability to express and portray emotion. Painting is also a physical act; it is translating an emotion, a thought, a feeling and using body movements to demonstrate that. I try to make my feelings tangible. The ultimate challenge for me is to completely enjoy my craft. I think art has to be enjoyed, it is the impetus that draws humans to creative endeavors. Desire and enjoyment are the most critical elements in my creative process.
